Fiore Italian Greyhounds

An Intro to Italian Greyhounds

About Italian Greyhounds:

The Italian Greyhound (IG) is a true greyhound. His small size is the result of selective breeding. It is not clear as to whether the IG was originally bred for hunting or as a pet and companion. Today, the IG enjoys the comfort of a home, but also appreciates exercise and outdoor activity.

IGs thrive best with their owners and immediate families. As a result, he may seem to be aloof or apprehensive with strangers. The IG is sensitive, alert and intelligent, and adapts to most households, getting along well with other pets and children.

Italian Greyhounds are short coated, and react negatively to both the cold and rain. They are neither backyard nor basement dogs. On cold and inclement days, your IG will prefer to snuggle under covers on a bed, or on a family sofa. On the whole, an IG would much rather be in your lap or on a bed, than on the floor.

It is common for an IG to live for 14 or 15 years, and many times, an even longer life can be expected. With good care, you will be rewarded with many years of companionship from your Italian Greyhound.

The Official Breed Standard:

The Italian Greyhound is very similar to the Greyhound, but much smaller and more slender in all proportions, and ideal in elegance and grace. The height at the whithers is ideally 13" to 15". Any color and markings are acceptable, with the exception of brindle markings and tan markings normally found on black-and-tan dogs. The coat should be glossy like satin, and soft to the touch.
